Health & Safety
Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and the general public. In addition to local safety regulations, we comply with international requirements, including the IFC Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Mining.
Training
As one of the largest private sector employers in the areas where we operate, we are committed to building local skills and technical expertise. Our mines have become hubs for local technical training. Karebe Mine has a training partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University’s mining faculty, and we have sent employees with outstanding potential overseas for specialist training in Zimbabwe and South Africa
Our Community
We fund a range of additional projects that materially improve the lives of our local communities
Striving for excellence means going beyond the royalty payments that we are required to make by law to finance infrastructure and social programmes. In both Nandi county, Kenya and Kadoma, Zimbabwe we fund a range of additional projects that materially improve the lives of our local communities, including: -construction and maintenance of roads, schools and clinics -sponsorship of local community events and 100 scholarships for children in Nandi County -financing of a water pipeline and electricity connection project, which has already delivered utitlities to two villages and homes around the Karebe community -provision of regular consumables for clinics, teachers and students; water and electricity connections.
Our Environment
We have a comprehensive environmental management system in place to monitor the effects of our operations on the environment
Responsible, sustainable environmental stewardship is one of our core values. We want to protect the environment for our children, grandchildren and generations to come. All of our operations comply with local and international regulations, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards on measuring, mitigating and reporting environmental impact, as well as the IFC Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Mining. We have a comprehensive environmental management system in place to monitor the effects of our operations on the environment and address any issues that arise.
